One of our favorite recipes here at the Museum. The cream of tartar makes this dough stay smooth for a long time! Children get to learn some kitchen basics in measuring and math (and patience), plus you can experiment with mixing colors. What dough creations and colors will you make? - 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup salt
- 1 tablespoon cream of tartar (If you don’t have this, don’t worry! Just add an extra tablespoon of flour.)
- Food coloring (optional)
- Medium saucepan
- Large spoon
- 1 cup flour
- Adult supervision!
1. Combine water, oil, salt, cream of tartar and food coloring in a saucepan over medium-high heat until very warm. (Not boiling. If it starts to boil, don’t worry, you’ll just have to wait longer for kneading.)
2. Remove from heat and add flour.
3. Stir, then knead (wait till dough is cool enough to touch) until smooth (approx. 3-5 minutes).
4. Store this dough in an airtight container or zip-top bag.
