World Turtle Day

Happy World Turtle Day! Now our Mister Rogers is not a turtle. (He’s a tortoise.) But he’s never one to shy away from any excuse to be celebrated. Here are two no-mess crafts to celebrate Mister Rogers our Russian Tortoise and all turtles out there!

Egg Carton Turtle

Messy level: 1 
(5 = Super messy. 1 = Not messy at all.)

Materials

  • Egg carton
  • Scissors
  • Pom poms
  • Googly eyes
  • Glue or hot glue

Instructions

1. Cut out an egg carton section.

2. Glue four pom poms to the open end of your egg carton to form turtle legs.

3. Glue a pom pom to the carton to be the turtles head.

4. Add googly eyes to complete your turtle!

Coffee Filter (or Cupcake Liner) Turtle

Messy level: 1 
(5 = Super messy. 1 = Not messy at all.)

Materials

  • Cupcake liner or coffee filter
  • Brown Maker
  • Green construction paper
  • Glue
  • Googly eyes (optional)

Instructions

1. Using the green construction paper, cut out a circle for the turtle’s head and two long strips for legs.

2. Glue legs in an x shape

3. Using the brown marker make circles (or any design!) on the liner or filter

4. Glue liner or filter onto the legs

5. Glue on eyes or draw them if no googly eyes are available

Turtle Facts

  1. There are over 300 species of turtles and tortoises
  2. Turtles are ‘amniotes’ – they breathe air and lay their eggs on land, although many species live in or around water
  3. The oldest ever recorded, named Tu”i Malila, of Tonga Island, passed away at the grand old age of 188!
