Owl Pellet Dissection
Saturday, Oct. 19, 12:30 – 1:45 pm
Don’t worry – owl pellets are not poop! As birds of prey, owls eat a wide variety of animals such as rodents, small birds, and even amphibians. The bones, fur, and feathers of their prey are not digestible, resulting in a “pellet” that the owl coughs up. Looking closely at these pellets, we will be able to identify types of bones and skulls, and often can figure out what type of animals the owl ate. Families will work together to dissect an owl pellet, identify the bones, and make a bone chart to take home.
